On my lvl 24 commando I run out of ammo way to fast any tips or ideas to help

Welcome to ammo management :)

So do you know how the mechanic works ? The more ammo you use the slower you regenerate ammo.

Under your ammo bar there are four little arrows that change color , If you make the arrows go red its very slow .

So you need to use some hammer shots to space out your rotation .

You are using the recharge and reload button between fights ?

Your going to have to test it out but something like two normal hits then a hammershot , use recharge cells during boss fights and end class quest fights.
