With A Little Help From My Friends – David Bass Talks Community

If an edifice is meant to endure it must be built upon an enduring foundation. BioWare has spent 16 years perfecting their craft, which was quite impressive even in the early days. Add to that the cultural impact of one of the most popular IPs in history and you have laid your first stones for excellence and success in bedrock.

Republic Trooper believes in community, and Andy and I have always called RT a community site as opposed to a fan site. Nothing embodies community like the code between soldiers—warriors dedicated to protecting life above all else.

Always In Motion Is The Future – Musings On The Old Republic

Always In Motion Is The Future – Musings On The Old Republic

A gaming press reviewer put it well when he said something along the lines of “Every MMO gets you to go out and kill 10 rats. The difference with this game is, you actually care why you’re going out and killing those 10 rats.” So if this game will be a success, it will be because of BioWare’s story.

Many elements of Star Wars: The Old Republic will be familiar to any MMO veteran. In essence, BioWare seems to have taken a “best in class” approach, borrowing the best ideas from other MMO’s while leaving their less-desirable aspects behind. Pretty much every feature you’d expect in a “triple A” MMO is present. But familiarity breeds contempt, and a big intellectual property (IP) is also no guarantee of success – just look at Star Trek Online or DC Universe Online. But take those two together – the familiarity and the big IP -and add the (hitherto missing) element of story and you may have a winner.
